President Eisenhower & the Cold War
Lesson Outline
President Eisenhower entered office in 1953 and immediately issued the New Look policy, which combined moderation and toughness to combat communist expansion through diplomacy, containment and brinkmanship. Eisenhower's policy replaced ground forces with nuclear arms and CIA covert programs. The overriding goal was to combat communism without bankrupting the economy.

Eisenhower stood firm against international communist expansion. He supported brinkmanship, which called for escalating tensions so that the opponent falters. He engaged communism in Egypt, Guatemala and the Philippines. Domestically, he passed the Communist Control Act and the National Defense Education Act. Eisenhower will forever be remembered for his farewell address in which he warned against the rise of the military-industrial complex in the United States.

The Vietnam War
Lesson Outline
America was involved in the Vietnam Warfrom 1954 to 1975. Following the Second World War, communist leader Ho Chi Minh was successful in regaining control of Indochina. However, France soon returned to power. The First Indochina War (1946-1954) broke out as a result of the conflict between Ho Chi Minh's Viet Minh forces and the French. France was eventually crushed at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu, which resulted in peace talks opening at the Geneva Conference. The U.S. decided to support the division of Vietnam at the 17th parallel and endorsed Ngo Dinh Diem. Both Kennedy and Johnson attempted to win the war in Vietnam with Operation Rolling Thunder and the introduction of ground forces. The Tet Offensive of 1968 proved to be the breaking point for the US as the American public caught a glimpse of a failing effort. By the end of 1968, the US was looking to honorably end the war in Vietnam. President Richard Nixon attempted to achieve that sought-after end through strategies such as Vietnamization, bombing campaigns in Cambodia & Laos. Eventually, the US and North Vietnam entered into the Paris Peace Accords which officially ended American involvement in the war. Without the assistance of the US, South Vietnam capitulated under the pressure of the North Vietnamese and the Viet Cong on April 30, 1975. The North Vietnamese achieved victory and the war in Vietnam was officially finished.

As music and singing are Performing Arts, I decided Bella and I would do some play-reading (short 2-person scenarios) so as to assess both her reading/expressiveness and her clarity of speech. She had previously done no drama, but proved excellent in-character.

The Korean War: 1950 - 1953
Lesson Outline
The North Korean army invaded South Korea on June 25, 1950, crossing the 38th parallel, which was the border between the two countries. General Douglas MacArthur counterattacked by landing Marines at Inchon, and cutting the supply lines to the North Korean forces surrounding the Pusan Perimeter. The North Korean army retreated out of South Korea. U.S. and United Nations forces followed them into North Korea and pushed the North Korean army all the way to the Chinese border. The Chinese army counterattacked. The U.S. and United Nations forces were pushed back by the Chinese and North Korean forces into a stalemate. The North Koreans and Chinese on one side and the United Nations, represented by U.S. officials on the other, negotiated from October 25, 1951, to June 27, 1953 finally signing the Korean Armistice Agreement on June 27th. The war had lasted from 1950-1953.
