We compared and contrasted the use of dialogue in a work of literature versus a play. The two works we looked at were _Pride and Prejudice_ and _Hamlet_. We discussed the conventions of writing dialogue in literature including quotation marks, dialogue tags, paragraph breaks, and more.

The computer dedicated to virtual lessons had a problem with its speaker so that she could her me but I could not hear her responses. She quickly adapted to the difficulty, took it in stride, and worked through the lesson with no problem. I was impressed by her willingness to rise above the technical glitch and her dedication to her education.
Virtual lesson. I began by attempting to stimulate melodic phrases from Jaydn based on existing lyrics, but she prefers to compose her own at some point, so I concentrated instead on teaching her basic rhythm notation, which is new to her. I'll continue to build up her understanding and interpretation of written rhythms.
Jaydn read the next chapter of Jeanette Wall's The Glass Castle. She was then given the following prompt and asked to discuss it using text from the novel integrated with her answer:
On one hand, Jeannette Walls describes the squalor she and her family lived in: hunger, poverty, garbage, lack of basic necessities. On the other, she describes the rich intellectual world her parents imparted: discussions of geology, math, literature, art. In light of the fact that three out of the four Walls children became successful, productive members of society, what do you think is more important to children’s development: comfortable living conditions or an enriching intellectual environment?
Today we analyzed the intro of Pride and Prejudice. We discussed the concepts of "burning question", exposition, dialogue, setting, description, and narration. We discussed what it is about this book that makes it resonate with so many readers.
We did a quick review of chapter 2 for her quiz on Friday. We then started chapter 3. We discussed physical properties of matter (extensive and intensive).
Assignment
Online assignment (Chapter 2 Section 4). Study for quiz on Chapter 2 on Friday.
This was our first class and we spent the time talking about goals for this yoga course, getting to know each other, and anything to keep in mind as we move forward in class such as injuries, illnesses, triggers, etc.
I explained to Jaydn the definitions of lines, rays, and line segments as well as betweenness of points. After defining the terms, I asked her some questions to enhance her understanding of these definitions and some postulates. There was no assignment.

Lesson Comments
Although Jaydn does not yet have a text book, she was able to follow the lesson well enough to answer most of the questions correctly. She is a very conscientious student.
Jaydn read the next three chapters of Jeannette Walls The Glass Castle. After reading she developed the theme of practicing extreme nonconformity and its effect on the Walls children. Jaydn also discussed the irony of the father's behavior throughout the chapters.
