Working collaboratively with me, Jaydn produced this:
The symbol of the insurance check, in "A Raisin in the Sun" truly represents the hope that each and every character can truly achieve his or her own dream. For Walter the check means his dream of owning his own liquor business can become a reality. For Mama, it means she can finally move into a new home. For Beneatha, it's money for her college tuition, so that she can attend college and become a doctor. Beneatha has always wanted to become a doctor so that she can help cure others. Beneatha tells Asagai that she witnessed an accident where a boy's face was split in half and he was rushed into an ambulance; he ended up coming home with stiches, but he was alive. After that, Beneatha knew she wanted to cure people just like how the doctors cured that little boy. "That was what one person could do for another, fix him up--sew up the problem, make him all right again. That was the most marvelous thing in the world . . . and I wanted to do that. I always thought it was the one concrete thing in the world that a human being could do. Fix up the sick, you know--and make them whole again. This was truly being God . . ." The check represents The American Dream, it brought together a family once broken with no way of achieving their dreams and turned them into a family that was willing to fight for their pride and hope.
Needless to say, it was a great session--and her birthday! :-)

During our first session, we completed Jaydn's essay comparing the poem, "Leisure ", with the theme of "Our Town." After Jaydn completed her conclusion, we edited the essay by correcting punctuation , by addressing word choice, and by discussing parallel structure . During our second session, we began our poetry unit. Using my distributed material, I explained the different types of poetry-lyric, narrative, dramatic ,and didactic. I further discussed some preliminary interpretative steps : identify the speaker, identify poetic devices such as personification, and paraphrase the poem. We then read the poem "Trees" and Jaydn applied these skills by identifying the speaker, the type of poem-lyric-and the use of personification. We last explored whether art or nature is the more eternal and how God's creations differ from Man's.

Jaydn continued working on her essay comparing the theme of the poem "Leisure " with the theme of the play,"Our Town." We worked on completing the paragraph discussing the poem's entreaty to "stand and stare" at nature and comparing it to Emily's observation that the "moon is wonderful and terrible." Jaydn did well recognizing how to use direct quotes to support her ideas. After we examined how to write a conclusion ,Jaydn drafted a topic sentence for her final paragraph.
