Jayden actively participated in class discussion focused on how Charlie's phenomenal mental development only increases his alienation from others. We discussed how his co-workers and landlady no longer feel comfortable around him in context of the themes of conformity and acceptance. Likewise, we explored why Charlie's relationship with Ms Kinnian inevitably fails as Charlie is no longer able to connect with people. Jaydn enjoyed discussing how scientific experiments often lead to unintended negative consequences. Last, we noted how to address run-on sentences in her study guide homework.
The President's message to his advisors and the American people was, "Unity at home, neutrality abroad." He established a group of self-appointed advisors in his Cabinet. There were only four members of the first presidential Cabinet! He stepped down after serving 2 consecutive terms as president - even though his supporters begged him not to do it! Washington told them that he didn't fight an American Revolution, against unreasonable king, to become a monarch himself. He said it was time for our country to witness the peaceful transfer of power from one president to another...and indeed it did, from Washington himself to the second U.S. President, John Adams.
Jaydn was transfixed by a tragic current event that hapened over the weekend in S.Korea where "a devastating crowd surge in South Korea's capitol claimed the lives of more than 150 people, details have begun to emerge that emphasize just how chaotic the scene was. Authorities say that in addition to the dead there are more than 130 others injured, many of whom were young adults in Seoul's Itaewon neighborhood. The popular district in Seoul was hosting Halloween celebrations that drew around 100,000 people when the crowd surge began. Many were attempting to gather in a narrow alley filled with bars and restaurants, according to local media." Jaydn explained a lot of what she already knew about this tragedy to me as she monitored the events over the weekend.

This is the 2nd class this week where Jaydn says she can't hear any audio I share with her.I have checked all settings, my microphone and sound are both on, but she still can only hear my voice and nothing I share with her. She can only see what I share. I think we need some tech support help.
In today's class, we continued practicing conversion factors. We will spend some more classes working on this concept since it is the base concept for future topics.
In his will, Jefferson freed all of Sally's surviving children, Beverly, Harriet, Madison, and Eston, as they came of age. (Harriet was the only enslaved woman Jefferson allowed to go free.) Of the 100s of enslaved individuals he legally owned, Jefferson freed only 5 in his will, all men from the Hemings family. They were also the only enslaved family group freed by Jefferson. Sally Hemings' children were 7/8 European in ancestry, and three of the four entered white society after gaining their freedom; their descendants likewise identified as white. His will also petitioned the legislature to allow the freed Hemingses to stay in the state. No documentation has been found for Sally Hemings's own emancipation. Jefferson's daughter Martha (Patsy) Randolph informally freed the elderly Hemings after Jefferson's death. As the historian Edmund S. Morgan has noted, "Hemings herself was withheld from auction and freed at last by Jefferson's daughter, Martha Jefferson Randolph, her niece." This informal freedom allowed Hemings to live in Virginia with her two youngest sons for the next 9 years until her death in 1833. Although Jefferson inherited great wealth at a young age, he was bankrupt by the time he died. His entire estate, including most enslaved people, was sold by his daughter Martha to repay his debts.
Sarah "Sally" Hemings (c. 1773 – 1835) was an enslaved woman with 1/4 African ancestry owned by US President Thomas Jefferson.
Sally Hemings' mother Elizabeth (Betty) was bi-racial, the child of Susannah, an African woman and Captain John Hemings. Sally's father was John Wayles who was the father of Jefferson's deceased wife Martha. Therefore, she was half-sister to Jefferson's deceased wife and approximately 3/4 white. During the 26 months Sally Hemings lived with Jefferson in Paris, she was a free woman and a paid servant, slavery not being legal in France. During this time, under circumstances that are not well understood, she and Jefferson may have fallen in love. As attested by her son, Madison Hemings, she later negotiated with Jefferson that she would return to Virginia and resume her slave status as long as all their children would be emancipated upon turning 21.
