The Start of WWII
Lesson Outline
Today we focused primarily on Hitler's military strategy and invasions that led to WWII. The Second World War was largely the result of the failures of the Treaty of Versailles of World War I. When the Allied powers of Great Britain, France, and the United States finalized the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, Germany was blamed for the war and faced many steep punishments that demoralized and financially ruined the nation. From 1919 to 1939, Germany experienced an economic recession that fostered resentment toward the Allied nations and allowed for fascist ideology to develop in Germany.
World War II officially began when Germany, under the leadership of Adolf Hitler, invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. As a result of the Treaty of Versailles, Germany and the Soviet Union lost territory that became Poland. In August of 1939, Germany and the Soviet Union signed the Non-Aggression Pact, which pledged that the two countries would not take military action against each other for ten years, planned for the joint invasion of Poland, and a secret agreement to divide Eastern Europe. Two days after the invasion of Poland, Great Britain and France declared war on Germany. While the invasion of Poland has been noted as the start of World War II, many historians, however, note that World War II potentially started in 1931 when Japan invaded Manchuria or when Italy invaded Ethiopia in 1935.

Proving triangles congruent
Lesson Outline
The plan was to practice proving triangles congruent with Jaydn. The problems would consist of pairs of triangles which were congruent or not. If they were congruent, Jaydn would be required to give the reason why, and if not, Jaydn would state that they were not. Unfortunately, I was unable to contact her either in person or virtually. There was no assignment.

Jaydn reviewed the SAT vocabulary unit being studied and then took an assessment test that she mastered. She then read, analyzed, and discussed the next two chapters of Where the Crawdads Sing and wrote responding to the quote "sand keeps secrets better than mud" relating it to the setting of the novel. This required critical thinking as well as descriptive writing.

The Soviet Union Under Stalin: 5-Year Plans, Purges & Policies
Lesson Outline
As one of the most vicious eras in the Soviet Union, the rule of Joseph Stalin negatively impacted his people and radically changed the country's economy. Today's lesson focused on Stalin's rule, including his rise, five-year plans, purges and policies, and his death. With his forced industrialization of Russia, Stalin looked to expand Soviet influence outward into territory the Russian Empire had lost after WWI. Soon after Stalin signed a non-aggression pact with Hitler, he annexed Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and invaded Eastern Poland and parts of Romania. He also invaded Finland. However, when Hitler broke the pact and invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, Stalin allied with the British and French, and later the Americans. As a result, Stalin had a seat at the negotiating table with American President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in deciding the makeup of post-war Europe. Through keen negotiating skills, Stalin expanded the Soviet Union when the Western countries recognized Soviet possession of the states Stalin had annexed and invaded during the chaos of WWII. Additionally, the Soviet Union gained control of several Eastern European states which Stalin claimed it needed as a buffer from future central European aggression. After WWII, Stalin continued to hold an iron grip on power in the Soviet Union and encouraged the growth of communism elsewhere, especially in the Korean peninsula. Imprisonment and exile in the Soviet Union became even more common than it had been before the war, as Stalin became more and more paranoid of Western invasion. He died in 1953; he was 74 years old.

Lesson Comments
Jaydn was a bit shaken today and understandably, not able to complete her HW last night. She explained that Andrew arrived home from a CO ski trip with his father & Matthew. Mr. Mohler, Matthew & the nanny have all contracted Covid. The quarantine period is 2 weeks in CO so they have to stay there for a while. Andrew was able to fly back to FL after testing negative and he is at his mom's home. Jaydn is worried as Andrew is unvaccinated and as we know, she is immune compromised. Andrew was just with his father & Matthew in CO and has been exposed, to three people with Covid. I'm happy to work remotely with Andrew next week. For health and safety protection & protocol, I won't be able to sit in a room with Andrew next week. So glad we had a few minute to talk about this today, Judie. Thank you.
