Introducing the Hypotenuse-Leg Theorem of triangle congruence.
Lesson Outline
I explained to Jaydn the requirements for proving two right triangles congruent. After listing the hypotenuses, one leg, and the right angles as the necessary ingredients for congruence, I showed her several scenarios where she would find those values in the diagrams. We did some problems togther. There was no assignment.

Jaydn's attendance has improved and she is much more able to follow the examples since she doesn't have the same large gaps in her attendance.
SSS, SAS, ASA, AAS Theorems of triangle congruence.
Lesson Outline
I introduced Jaydn to four of the five theorems for triangle congruence. These were the SSS, SAS, ASA, AAS Theorems of triangle congruence, which are named based on which parts of the triangles must be shown to be congruent in order to have triangle congruence.

Lesson Comments
Jaydn continued to work on learning about triangle congruences. She works hard but is very tentative in her answers..
Jaydn wrote an essay on the theme of isolation and the Afghanistan man's insistence of a woman wearing a burqa. After completing the essay, Jaydn read, discussed and analyzed chapter 17 of A Thousand Splendid Suns. She then reviewed SAT vocabulary.
American Involvement in World War I: How the War Changed After America's Entry
Lesson Outline
Up until just before the U.S. declared war on April 6th, 1917, the U.S. had desperately tried to stay neutral, but ties to Britain, propaganda, the sinking of ships by German U-boats, and a German attempt in the Zimmermann Note to get Mexico to declare war on the U.S. pushed the U.S. to get involved. In this lesson, we looked at how the U.S. got the troops and funds for the war, the impact at home, and American involvement in combat and bringing the war to an end. After declaring war against the Central Powers on April of 1917, the U.S. needed to quickly mobilize for war. To raise troops, Congress passed the Selective Service Act, formally instituting the draft. Money for the war was raised through taxes and Liberty Bonds, but also people did their part by planting victory gardens. The American Expeditionary Force was separate from the Allied forces, but still gave the needed manpower to build Allied morale and break the German forces. The Treaty of Versailles officially ended the war with Germany.
The Armenian genocide of 1915 was one of the most brutal extermination attempts in modern world history. In this lesson, we looked at the history, causes, and effects of the systematic killing of over 1.5 million people. Unfortunately, genocides, or the systematic extermination of a group of people, have been a part of the human experience since civilization began. The 1915 Armenian genocide is not as well-known as genocides like the Holocaust, and that's partly because some in the international community do not even acknowledge that it occurred. But it was, in fact, one of the most horrific mass exterminations in history. From 1915 to 1918, the Turkish government deported, enslaved, tortured, and killed 1.5 to 2 million Armenians in an effort to ethnically and religiously "cleanse" the Turkish nation. Whether it's called a genocide or not, it's clear that the 1915 Armenian genocide was not in fact an isolated incident; instead, it was the culmination of several years of oppression at the hands of the Islamic-Turkish Ottoman Empire. The Young Turks ruled the Ottoman Empire at the time, and they used the brutal Special Organization to murder up to two million Armenians. The Armenian people were nearly wiped out. But some did survive, and today, after enduring multiple massacres, Armenia exists as an independent nation.
Jaydn discussed the theme of abuse and how it is affecting the protagonist of Miriam and the antagonist Rasheed. She compared Miriam's abuse to the abuse the Afghanistan people are suffering at the hands of their government and the revolution. She then reviewed the SAT vocabulary being studied. She used the words in sentences about the characters and storyline of the novel being read.
