The United States in World War I: Official Position, Isolation & Intervention
Lesson Outline
Today we looked at the buildup to the U.S. entering World War I. The U.S. attempted to stay neutral, but the buildup of sympathy towards Britain and outrage towards Germany made staying neutral almost impossible. The sinking of British ships carrying American passengers, such as the RMS Lusitania, pushed the States to the brink of war. Then, finally, the Zimmermann Note pushed the U.S. to declaring war in April of 1917. The Zimmermann Note was a telegram intercepted by by the British and shared with U.S. intelligence. Sent by Germany to Mexico, Germany asked Mexico to declare war and attack the U.S. In return for the favor, Germany would help Mexico to regain some of its territories in the U.S. (i.e TX, AZ, NM and parts of CA). This was the final straw and the U.S. declared war against Germany in April of 1917.
Slope calculations for parallel and perpendicular lines plus review
Lesson Outline
I did some calculations of perpendicular and parallel slopes with Jaydn. We then went through some examples of graphs of two perpendicular lines. I showed Jaydn how to apply the formula to find the slope of a line through two points. We also did some review problems over special angle pairs. There was no assignment.

Lesson Comments
Sometimes Jaydn has difficulty concentrating on some of the simpler concepts, which make it difficult for her to learn geometry.
Algebraic proofs of parallel and perpendicular lines.
Lesson Outline
I explained to Jaydn how the slopes of parallel lines are equal and how the products of the slopes of perpendicular lines equal -1. We did some problems together and had a review of special angle pairs which are either congruent or supplemental. There was no assignment.

Lesson Comments
Jaydn has been very attentive and responsive recently, a refreshing change.
Jaydn read chapters 5 and 6 A Thousand Splendid Suns. She discussed and wrote a short essay on the themes of love, loyalty, and belonging as seen in these chapters. She used text based support as support for her interpretations of the themes. She then orally reviewed SAT vocabulary being studied.
World War I was unlike any war preceding it. In many respects, it was the first truly 'modern' war. Never before had technology been put to such destructive ends. On land, at sea and in the air, mechanized warfare was carried out with devastating efficiency. Mechanized warfare is the use of advanced machines in war. Aircraft, armored vehicles, modern artillery, machine guns—these are all examples of mechanized warfare. World War I was characterized by trench warfare, in which opposing armies dug sophisticated trenches into the ground to provide cover - and armies remained in these trenches for years! The open space between the opposing trenches was 'no man's land' because no man wanted to enter this dangerous area. Soldiers living in trenches experienced appalling conditions. WWI was a war of 'firsts'. It was the first war in which airplanes, tanks, machine guns, blimps (zeppelins), poison gas and submarines were used. It was also the first modern war characterized by genocide: the Armenian Genocide. We will be studying this tragic & horrific event in greater detail later in this unit.
