I was a substitute from 9:47am-10:32am. Sub. plans were provided. Joshua is a pleasure to work with. He is such a wonderful student. Please share this with him.
Today Joshua and I practiced how to evaluate trig functions using the unit circle. First, I had Joshua complete a blank unit circle. He will have a quiz on this on Monday. Then we used the unit circle to practice evaluating things like sin(pi), cos(0), tan(2Pi). Joshua is getting the hang of it. He needs more practice for fluency.
After we reviewed the elements of the Freytag pyramid , we analyzed which scene of the play constitutes the play's climax in the context of which scene dramatizes the play's critical conflict, a battle between father and son. We discussed how the play's climax dramatizes how Willy's values once synonymous with the American Dream have fallen out of vogue and have created rift between a son who rejects Willy's lifestyle and blames Willy for his failures. Further ,we examined whether Biff's condemnation of his father is justified. After defining the term "requiem" we then examined the final scene of the play and noted how Willy's life has been misdirected toward a goal he simply was not suited to achieve. Joshua addressed Biff's summation of Willy's life that ,"he had all the wrong dreams."
Today Joshua and I began by checking his homework from last night. He got a 100% with no questions, so we moved on to today's very important lesson. Today Joshua and I discussed the Unit Circle. I used the white board and expo markers to draw a circle. We counted around the circle in radians and degrees. Then we determined the coordinates of each point along the unit circle. I showed Joshua the relationship between the angle measures and their sides. Next, we related the unit circle to the three main trig functions. Then we practiced evaluating things like sin(2pi/3). We will build on this tomorrow.
Discussed the review for the chapter 12 test and then did the test up until the last question which is essay style/paragraph style and so is assigned as separate homework.
We finished reviewing and editing Joshua's essay comparing the characters' varying perception of the American Dream in "Death of A Salesman." As Joshua had difficulty in formulating a conclusion paragraph, I provided instruction on techniques and elements to include in a final paragraph of a literary essay. I further provided model sentences , offered concepts for discussion , and last ,directed Joshua to specific dialogue to facilitate his analysis. We then worked on writing a conclusion that expands on the thesis and leaves the reader with a provocative image or idea. During the remainder of the session, we reviewed Joshua's rewrite and the body of the essay. I provided suggestions for sentence organization within a paragraph as well as using more concrete nouns and verbs to advance his argument.
