reaction types
Lesson Outline
Review and correct HW question. View lab results which have settled overnight in beaker and discuss. Introduce the third of the double replacement reaction types, the formation of a gas.
Write a molecular formula on the board and have Joshua complete the total ionic and net ionic equation and indicate the gas formed.
Explain that this reaction is a dual reaction, a double replacement followed by a decomposition.
Begin both reactions on the board

Late start and computer difficulties starting after the break for Joshua so I assigned some homework, but it's ok if he doesn't have time until Tuesday's class.

The Things they Carried-War novel
Lesson Outline
We worked on rewriting Joshua's homework analyzing the verbal irony of the author's statement that his decision not to evade the Viet Nam draft was an act of cowardice. We studied the passages that contain an element of fantasy and discussed how the author uses imagination as a vehicle to tell a deeper truth. I discussed in detail the societal zeitgeist of the late 1960s including the youth anti-war movement. I further noted textual passages to incorporate in the homework in order to avoid generalities as well as the meaning and use of verbal irony. After discussing the societal pressure placed on young men subject to the draft, Joshua rewrote his assignment incorporating textual details and a good explanation of verbal irony.

Aqueous reactions
Lesson Outline
Working from a word equation depicting a double replacement reaction and the state of both reactants and products, show how to write the total ionic equation after balancing. From the total ionic equation, examine how to write the net ionic equation. Do this for 2-3 textbook problems. In the lab proceed with a mini lab to form a precipitate from magnesium sulfate and sodium hydroxide. Prepare to complete the conclusions and questions after the precipitate settles over night.

2.10 Logarithmic
Lesson Outline
Today we spent reviewing logarithmic equations. Joshua had some difficulty with the portion of his homework involving inverses. We spent time to review those concepts, redo those problems, and try new problems. Joshua and I had a good discussion about proper notation. We used Khan Academy to verify how to prove that two functions are inverses. I noticed that some of Joshua's explanations were getting lengthy. I encouraged him to use the concept of "less is more" when providing explanations. I explained to him that if at any point Joshua says something ambiguous or something that could be proven wrong he may risk losing credit. Instead, Joshua should write the minimum required to make his claim.

The Things they Carried-War novel
Lesson Outline
We worked on analyzing tone and diction by completing an exercise comparing how Hemingway and O'Brien depict the death of soldiers in war. I worked with Joshua on incorporating portions of text into his answers and in forming a topic sentence for a comparative paragraph. We then studied various passages from the two novels for support. Next, I provided instruction on the literary term "tone" and discussed how to infer tone from diction. Joshua then rewrote his homework response to identify the two authors' tone - blunt , nonchalant- and to identify words and metaphors that exemplify the authors' tone.

2.10 Logarithmic Functions
Lesson Outline
Today Joshua and I worked on Logarithmic functions. We started with drawing the graph of an exponential function. We recognized the asymptote, domain and range. Then we discussed since exponentials and logarithms are inverses, we could swap their x's and y's and we would get the new function. We then discussed the logarithm function's asymptote, domain, range. Then we practiced if given two functions how to tell if they are inverses without actually solving. We used the composition of their functions and if it results in x, then they are functions. Anything other than x would determine they are not functions. Joshua disliked logs at first, but I think since he's starting to get a better understanding of them, he's starting to not mind them so much.
