AP TEST PREP
Lesson Outline
We continue to prepare for next week's AP exam by completing practice tests. Today, we addressed strategies for analyzing and composing the prose analysis essay by reviewing the essay Joshua completed for homework last evening.. We first focused on the prompt -a character's complex view of her changed environment . Joshua's essay impressively addressed many techniques and elements but we addressed how to expand the scope of his analysis to earn what the AP describes as the "sophistication point." I explained the contrast in environments can also be described as a contrast between order and dissonance with the main character yearning for dissonance which the passage symbolically associates with sunlight. For our final test review, I assigned a literary argument essay which we will review and discuss next week before the exam.

Esters
Lesson Outline
Discuss esterification. Use formulas of organic acids and alcohols to depict how an ester is formed by dehydration. Introduce the general formula and highlight that the oxygen atom between the alcohol and the acid is part of the alcohol moiety. Use examples of esters to indicate the nomenclature. Introduce salts of esters formed by reactions with sodium hydroxide. Discuss and show examples of esters which are used in food and drinks and are listed as artificial taste ingredients. Discuss and show synthesis of oil of wintergreen which is methyl salicylate.

AP LITERARY ARGUMENT ESSAY
Lesson Outline
Today we studied how to construct the AP literary argument essay. Joshua 's essay addresses Ibsen's play,"The Doll's House." In order to avoid plot summarization, we first reviewed the model intro paragraph I provided, noting how the model intro contains an interpretation and addresses the question -the struggle between fear and courage. We then worked together on crafting an essay where the textual evidence ties to and supports the thesis I suggested -fear as an impediment to self -realization. We further worked on drafting sentences that explain the dramatic use of the foil to highlight the contrast between two characters-one who succumbs to fear and the protagonist, Nora, who confronts and overcomes societal norms to achieve a sense of true self and independence. We last reviewed how to construct a short AP style conclusion.

Lesson Outline
From a sketch of the structural formula for salicylic acid and acetic anhydride, write the synthesis for the product acetyl salicylic acid, which is aspirin. Discuss how when the product decomposes with moisture, acetic acid is released, which is vinegar. Determine that the smell of vinegar when a bottle of aspirin is opened indicates that the aspirin is decomposing and not up to strength. Draw the structural formula for N-acetyl para amino acid, which is acetaminophen (Tylenol). Note the structural likeness and discuss why both are analgesics. Introduce amides , their general formula and resonance atoms.
