Unit 4- Short Fiction II/function of character, setting ,and structure
Lesson Outline
As the curriculum advances in complexity we again are studying short fiction or short stories, today Sherwood Anderson's "The Untold Lie." I provided instruction on gleaning characterization from personal history, setting, details, and actions. We then identified techniques that reflect character such as symbols and figurative language. Last, we addressed thematic implications of these two techniques. For homework ,Joshua is writing an essay based on today's instruction.

Unit 4- Short Fiction II/function of character, setting ,and structure
Lesson Outline
I provided instruction by on the board outlining the meaning and function of characterization. I further provided instruction on how to analyze character by inferring and then addressing a character's motives, traits, bias, and personal history. I then noted how setting can also convey or reflect character. We then applied these theoretical constructs to three of the short stories we have already studied,"Two kinds, The Yellow Wallpaper, and The Story of an Hour. " Next, I explained some of the functions of character as at times providing contrast between values or illustrating an archetypal character development from ignorance to knowledge.
