In today’s class, we discussed oxidation numbers. We went over what they are and how they are different from ionic charges. We also watched a video that helped better explain them and how to calculate them. We then did a practice activity where Joshua had to solve a series of questions to get through a maze to the final correct answer.
Today we reviewed the the multiple choice problems he had for homework. He did 15 problems and got 13 of them correct. I was super proud of him for that. Then we pulled up a practice test from AP Classroom. We began the free response questions. He will finish them tonight.
In today’s class, we spent our time in the laboratory working with ordinary chemicals like acetic acid, hydrosulfuric acid, and butanol and combined them in unique ways to create floral, aromatic scents. We learned that through chemical processes, we can combine and create new aromas and chemicals that we did not have previously. This was part 2 to a lab we have already done, as new chemicals were ordered and available for use.
Today's lesson focused on the next stage of the research project-preparation for composing the first draft. We reviewed Joshua's formal outline to ensure he had a clear thesis and full topic sentences describing each "claim" section of the paper. We next explored how to use the outline as an organizational tool in conjunction with the note cards. I provided guidance by suggesting he create definitions in his paper for generic terms such as "internet usage" and that he tie his claims more directly to his thesis i.e. impacts of the internet on young people and students. Last, Joshua completed the final section of the outline -solutions to the issue raised by the paper.
