Atticus took his final test on "The Giver" during today's session. We worked on the need to elaborate his short essay answers by incorporating textual support.
Atticus and I spent our time on the mid-topic checkpoint that was assigned last Monday for homework and returned today. The questions pertained to exponents, greatest common factors, least common multiples, evaluating numerical expressions, and writing numerical expressions to model problems. He missed numerous problems that were easily completed in class. For homework, he was assigned 5 review questions and expected to show all of his work.
Atticus began class with a jump rope warmup. His goal was to complete 20 consecutive jumps. Atticus was able to surpass his goal by achieving 25 jumps. Next, he participated in a fun, competitive game of badminton. Atticus' serving skills and ability to return a serve have improved since last class. The period concluded with a review of the class.

I am subbing for Ms. Daniela Jackson for social studies.
After discussing famous authors with whom Atticus was familiar, we focused on biographical information about Charles Dickens. Atticus shared some information he had gleaned per his homework assignment, and I supplemented our discussion with information about the Victorian Era.I noted the existence of the Poor Laws, the workhouse ,and Debtors prison in the context of Dickens' life and discussed Dickens as a social reformer. We further explored how Christmas celebrations today are inspired by Queen Victoria's consort, Prince Albert, who brought the German Christmas traditions to the English speaking world. Last, I noted how Dickens adored the holiday and how our next reading, "A Christmas Carol" embodies Dickens' Christmas and reformist spirit.

Atticus graded and self-corrected the unit 3 readiness assessment on using all operations with fractions and decimals and understanding expressions. He skipped many questions that he easily completed today for half credit, earning 68%. Today's lesson expanded on numerical expressions to include algebraic expressions. We discussed and wrote expressions to model real-world problems using variables to represent unknown quantities. We also discussed terms, coefficients, and constant numerical values. For homework, he was asked to complete the incomplete homework that was assigned last Monday.
