Today, Atticus and I completed a lab activity which illustrated how the cell membrane is semipermeable. Our lab activity consisted of placing a wire mesh segment over a bowl, and pouring nuts/seeds of various sizes over the mesh to see how size and shape affect the nuts'/seeds' ability to penetrate the "membrane". This principle applies to the cell membrane being semipermeable. Only materials (proteins/ions/minerals) of certain sizes and shapes may penetrate the cell membrane. He recorded his observations and inferences in his workbook.
Today's lesson focused on Mesopotamia. Atticus reviewed material that detailed what Mesopotamia means, "land between two rivers," and is called many different things, including the cradle of civilization. Atticus participated in class discussions and was allowed to watch a fun facts video.

Today's lesson focused on Mesopotamia. Atticus reviewed material that detailed what Mesopotamia means, "land between two rivers," and is called many different things, including the cradle of civilization. Atticus participated in class discussions and was allowed to watch a fun facts video. Atticus was on task.
Atticus and I began with a quick review of prime factorization, GCF, and LCM with Atticus writing examples of each on the whiteboard. Then, we began the next lesson on writing and evaluating numerical expressions. We discussed the order of operations, the importance of following their step-by-step rules, and the importance of working carefully while showing all work. Together, we evaluated expressions using the order of operations and Atticus was assigned numbers 13 - 18 from the lesson's practice and problem-solving.
Atticus participated in a fun, high energy, and competitive game of badminton with his teacher. His improvement throughout the class was noteworthy. The period concluded with a review of the class.
In order to reinforce using textual support for essays,I prepared and distributed an open book exercise that required Atticus to answer questions in short essay format using textual support. We discussed how to use the text to expand responses. Atticus then completed the exercise as well as a vocabulary exercise based on words from the reading.
Today, Atticus and I completed a lab activity on cell membranes. We observed/felt the outside and inside of an eggshell, inferred its function. We observed the interior contents and inferred their functions. We recorded our observations and inferences in our workbook. We then read about cell membranes, cytoplasm and cell walls (organelles), wrote down the vocab words and definitions, and drew pictures representing each.
I worked with Atticus to complete the background layer for his cell art project. We were able to finish all the tracings, but we discovered that additional work needed to be completed.
