Topic 8 Quadratic Functions
Lesson Outline
8-1 Key Features of a Quadratic Function – We learned that a quadratic function is a polynomial function in one or more variables in which the highest degree term is of the 2nd degree. The graph is a parabola. The value of the leading coefficient determines both the width of the parabola and the direction the parabola opens (upward or downward).

The Soviet Union Under Stalin: Five-Year Plans, Purges & Policies
Lesson Outline
Joseph Stalin was politically ambitious and climbed the ranks to become secretary general of the Central Committee of the Communist Party in 1922. After the death of Lenin, a power struggle occurred over who would be the next party leader. Joseph Stalin claimed power and became dictator of the Soviet Union.
Stalin's collectivization of Soviet farms drew upon the ideology of Marxism. The Five-Year Plans was put in place to direct economic and industrial output. Those not willing to go along with his collectivization plan were executed or sent to Gulags, prisons that utilized harsh forced labor programs. In 1936, Stalin began the ''Great Purge,'' which targeted those he considered a threat to him, and his ideas. Over 700,000 are believed to have been put to death, as a result of the purge. By 1939, Stalin expanded the Soviet Empire when he agreed to a nonaggression pact with Hitler. The pact with Germany allowed him to invade several eastern European countries the Russian Empire had lost after WWI. Lithuania, Estonia, Finland, and Latvia were all annexed, or invaded by the Soviet Union in the 1930s and 1940s.

The Rise of Communism & Vladimir Lenin
Lesson Outline
Vladimir Lenin (1870-1924) was a Russian political philosopher, revolutionary, and politician. Followers of his brand of Communism, inspired by the Karl Marx' and Friedrich Engels' anti-capitalist ideas, were called Bolsheviks. Bolsheviks supported the 1905 Russian revolution, which started with the massacre of civilians called Bloody Sunday. In February 1917 during WW1, a revolution overthrew the absolutist monarchy (since 1894 headed by Emperor Nicholas II). Bolsheviks led by Lenin took advantage of the ensuing instability to take over the power in a military coup in November 1917. Subsequently, they renamed Russia into Soviet Union, turning it into a repressive totalitarian one-party state. Lenin's interpretation of Marxism, modified by Joseph Stalin and known as Marxism-Leninism, became Soviet Union's official ideology.
