Today, Liam and I read Chapter 15 in Louis Sachar's 'The Boy in the Girls' Bathroom.' It was quite a chapter with a lot of interpersonal dynamics mentioned. Liam was attentive during the reading and was afforded cues and prompts to help him answer questions. We discussed the literary idiomatic expression, "he threw someone under the bus,' as the protagonist in the story fibbed to his mother after she said she would report an incident to the school principal, so he mentioned his best friend's name as the bully in the incident which was not the truth. We also discussed the meaning of the term 'scapegoat.' Liam was afforded examples to help him to better understand the meanings. Liam was queried following the story, but we stopped after Chapter 15 as there was a lot of material to digest in it.
Today we read about Christmas traditions around the world. We also learned about Hanukkah. This lesson exposes students to the diverse ways different cultures celebrate the holiday. From unique customs and rituals to varying cuisines and decorations, it showcases the richness of global cultural diversity. Liam also told me about his favorite Christmas movies, including "Home Alone" and The "Polar Express."
Liam was very excited to continue reading our book. We read Chapter 14, which contained a lot of information about Bradley getting excited to go to Jeff's house to do homework. We added characters to our list and Liam helped me add descriptions and character traits based on the information given by the author. I queried Liam periodically and offered supports to help him arrive at the answer. We reviewed vocabulary and Liam was encouraged to analyze the meaning of certain conversation exchanges between the characters and the predictions that could be made based on the information. Liam clearly appears to be enjoying the book and says he finds the events and characters very funny.
