Topic 8 Solve Problems Involving Surface Area and Volume

Topic 8-2 Find Volume of Cylinders – We recognize the relationship between the volume of a rectangular prism and the volume of the cylinder. Then we solved real-world problems involving the volume of the cylinder. We used the formula for the volume of a cylinder to find an unknown measure.
Today's first lesson on John Steinbeck's "The Pearl" addressed conflict and imagery as devices to illustrate theme. After providing biographical information on the author and explaining how the Depression of the 1920s informs Steinbeck's view of class and predestination, we reviewed the common forms of literary conflicts. Given Steinbeck's Naturalist literary inclination , Ben noted how the conflicts in the novella likely will arise between Man and Society. I then defined imagery. As we read the opening paragraphs, Ben identified examples of visual and auditory imagery as well as examples of metaphor. I discussed how imagery employed to describe Nature is an element of the Naturalist genre which suggests that external forces(like Nature) dictate inexorable outcomes.

Topic 8-2 Find Volume of Cylinders – We practiced finding the volume of a cone by applying a similar procedure to the volume of a right prism. The volume of a sphere is the same as twice the volume of a cone with the same circular base and weight.
Ben read the article "A Smart Grid? Electric Energy and the Future." I asked comprehension questions and he researched why a smart grid is necessary for the development of alternative energy sources. He developed a Google doc presentation.
Today we introduced Ch. 18 "America since the 1970's". Ben read from the text, answered geography connection questions, and we watched part of a documentary on President Nixon.
Ben and I discussed level design and how it works in his game concept. Ben's game is more open world so I had him begin designing the first stage of his game. I did a review of his first design and he made the appropriate changes.
