Today, Philip studied "The Evolutionary Importance of Cues in Protective Mimicry" journal article and defined vocabulary words from the article. We discussed how natural selection affects the evolution of these mimicry traits.
9-6 the Quadratic Formula and the Discriminant – We learned that the discriminant of a polynomial is a quantity that depends on the coefficients and determines various properties of the roots. It is generally defined as a polynomial function of the coefficients of the original polynomial. We learned that the quadratic formula can be used to solve every quadratic equation and is particularly useful for those that cannot be easily factored. Then we learned to use the discriminant to determine the number and type of solutions to a quadratic equation. Next we began to review for an end-of-course cumulative exam.
Today we interpreted the methodology and results of a scientific study including mean, standard deviation and the normal distribution. We discussed box and whisker plots and how they give a quick "snapshot" of the data.
Today we continued adding vocabulary, this time about directions in Spanish. Today he learned how to ask for directions and give directions in Spanish. Then he worked on the directions to go to the park for our field day next week.
