I provided instruction on how to write a synthesis essay using the provided sources. I first discussed isolating the claims from each source and examined how to synthesize the claims into an overarching thesis. As JP's draft did not reference any of the provided sources, I explained how the synthesis essay must rely on the given sources on the AP exam. I then modeled how to incorporate the sources into JP's thesis which was good . I further provided JP an outline to follow in his rewrite which he will complete for homework.
Today we reviewed for an upcoming Assessment. We focused on solving equations with variables on both sides and absolute value equations. JPaul did well. He needed a few reminders when the solutions are "no solution" or "infinite solutions" but he quickly recalled why. We will probably review one more day and then he will take a quiz/test.
View a series of diagrams and charts which indicate population size in developed and developing countries. Note where most people live globally, View and discuss how economic growth affects population growth. Discuss the per capita ecological footprint and the affect affluence has on it. Lesson Outline
For our first synthesis essay, JP is citing two assigned sources , a visual text and a humorous essay, by David Sedaris. In order to formulate an overriding thesis for the divergent sources, I first assisted JP in identifying the claim in each source. As the sources offer contrasting opinions, we then analyzed how to create a thesis that captures both sources recognizing the need to address the opposing view. JP then formulated a thesis about methods of learning distinguishing between learning a sport and an academic subject. I reiterated techniques to consider in drafting the opening paragraph . Homework-write synthesis essay citing the two sources.
Today he worked on Studyspanish.com and completed the basic quiz and the test for the preterite tense. After, we started to work on page 51 of the book.
Today JPaul and I reviewed for a Test he will have on Thursday. We covered topics from solving linear and absolute value equations, solving literal equations, and solving quadratic equations. JPaul took the lead and worked through the problems as I watched. I only interjected when he had questions or difficulty. He did pretty well. Tomorrow we will finish the review together.
Discuss population changes over time and the causes of these changes. Define and introduce the demographic transition theory which aids in understanding the reasons behind population fluctuations in the past and do they apply to the current time.
Examine the phase diagram which models the way in which the crude birth rate, the crude death rate, and the population growth occur for a nation with changing economic development. Introduce the 4 phases of the demographic theory and correlate the change in population, birth rate, and death rate as the nation progresses from agricultural to industrial. Discuss reasons for rapid population growth, the lowering of death rate while the birth rate remains high. Indicate why in phase 3 populations stabilize, while in phase 4 they decline. Discuss family planning as outlined in the text. Elicit reasons why families are choosing a smaller number of children as a nation moves toward greater affluence.
