As JP is working on an essay analyzing the rhetorical choices in a speech by RFK, I today assisted JP in forming paragraphs and in drafting an introduction and thesis statement. We first reviewed the speech and on the board, I noted certain rhetorical choices that could be mentioned in the essay. Using the notes on the board as an outline, we then discussed the speaker's purpose and audience and discussed how to use this information in the introduction paragraph . Next, noting the possible rhetorical elements we could address in the essay, JP redrafted his thesis statement . I then addressed how to form a separate paragraph for each element he chooses to incorporate or discuss : pathos, ethos, extended metaphor and syntax. I last demonstrated how to tie his comments about the rhetorical choices to the speaker's purpose and how to address the effectiveness of the rhetorical choices.
