Elicit 3-4 factors which will affect a forest ecosystem.
Expand the list to 8-9 major factors.
Discuss how each will play a role in disturbing the forest ecosystem.
Introduce and discuss the anthropogenic affects on a forest or woodland ecosystem.
Elicit ways in which the disturbances can be lessened.
Unit 3- Commentary and Methods of Argument Development
Lesson Outline
Today's session focused on introducing the elements of the synthesis essay. After watching a brief AP video on the subject, we studied a sample AP synthesis prompt and the provided evidentiary sources. I first highlighted the importance of studying the question to ensure that the thesis addresses the specific subject of the prompt, takes a position, and does not simply restate the prompt. We then studied the provided source material, and I assisted JP in choosing which sources best support the position he chose to argue. We then worked on composing a thesis based on the source material . Last, I provided instruction on MLA format and proper attribution of sources when composing the AP synthesis essay.
Today we started 1.3 on Rational Expressions. We started with simplifying rational expressions. This was a good review of the factoring we discussed last class. JPaul lead the notes as I guided him through the problems. These are similar to Algebra 2, but more tedious. We covered simplifying expressions, multiplying, and dividing. JPaul recalled when dividing fractions we “Keep Change Flip”. We also discussed the domain on the variable given and how if it were =0 it would cause the expression to be undefined.
Today we began by reviewing last night’s homework. JPaul had a question on one problem, which he needed some clarification on a factoring. JPaul used shell notes to take notes in while I directly instructed him. We discussed adding and subtracting rational functions. This was a review of factoring and how to determine the Least Common Multiple to get common denominators. We worked on changing the deminators to combine them. We also considered the domain’s restrictions after we simplified.
Review the importance of nitrogen products to living organisms.
Discuss the nitrogen cycle from atmospheric nitrogen to usable nitrates through the action of nitrogen fixing bacteria and bacteria of decay.
Discuss the phosphate cycle from the weathering of rock and mining of phosphate rock for fertilizer to the organic phosphate products formed by assimilation.
List and examine the human impact on the phosphate cycle. Include the formation of algae bloom, the formation of dead zones in aquatic ecosystems, and the overuse of phosphate containing detergents causing overgrowth.
