Nicky and I completed Chapter 2 from the Civics Textbook. We also watched an informative video on the oil industry, and began working on a cumulative chapter 2 activity.
Lesson 1: Forms of Energy – We reviewed how potential and kinetic energy differ and the three kinds of potential energy: gravitational, elastic, and chemical. Gravitational potential energy is when an object has mass and height above Earth’s surface such as water at the top of the waterfall. Chemical energy is energy that is stored and released in the bonds between atoms. Nuclear energy is the energy stored in and released from the nucleus of an atom. We compared and contrasted mechanical and thermal energy. Next we reviewed the types of energy carried by waves. Sound energy is carried by sound waves which are waves that move through matter and the energy carried by electromagnetic waves is radiant energy. Electromagnetic waves travel through matter and also through spaces with little or no matter. Nick took a practice quiz and will study the questions that he missed as well as his notes to prepare for a quiz tomorrow.

Lesson 1: Forms of Energy – We learned that chemical energy is energy that is stored and released in the bonds between atoms. Then we learned that nuclear energy is the energy stored in and released from the nucleus of an atom. The energy released from the Sun comes from nuclear fusion. During nuclear fusion nuclei of atoms join together and release large amounts of energy. During nuclear fission the nucleus of an atom breaks apart and energy is released. Energy used in nuclear power plants to make electricity comes from nuclear fission.
We discussed the differences between small businesses and start-ups. We also looked at the different types of business entities and reviewed the pros and cons of each. Nicky completed a Case Study on the start-up, Uber.
