Kate says she loves current events. We ended the week with more time and learning through CNN for Kids. Kate is very concerned about and interested in the water crises on both coasts. We researched information on WPTV.com and got updates on the toxic algae situation on the east coast of FL and the Red Tide issue on the west coast of FL. The situation seems to be improving slightly on both coasts. This seemed to allay some of Kate's anxieties as she was not only concerned about getting near the ocean this weekend, she was worried that toxic water could get into the pipes of her home. She left for the weekend feeling much better.
Today we continued to learn about Geography is Week 1 on maps. Yanuell now knows the difference between a political map and a physical map, along with map features such as a compass rose, map legend, and a map scale. Then we went on to learning about latitude and longitude lines. Yanuell answered a few comprehension questions to follow and got them all correct!
In today's lesson we discussed how people use technology to get information. It is much easier today to get information through the internet than it was years ago for people having to research through books. Arianna learned what primary and secondary sources are and we looked at some examples of each. There were multiple choice questions that followed, which she answered.

She was much better sitting at her desk today and less distracted.
We spent the first portion of the class on a Social Studies Weekly lesson, "A Geo Scheme for All of Us." We reviewed terms such as Geoscheme, cartographer, hemisphere, equator, cardinal directions, Prime Meridian and we identified all of them on a globe. We then transitioned from these basic concepts in geography to a review of current events through CNN for Kids.

Thursdays are a day when Kate has me for Social Studies for two hours, with a break for lunch in between. She did very well with this today! She even took notes when directed to do so.
Arianna and I got to know each other and she told me all about her Barbie house and introduced me to her adorable dog. We then took a walk through of the Studies Weekly website. She is somewhat familiar with bits of this program since she used it last year. I gave Arianna her username and password. She knows how he is able to earn coins/points by completing assignments and answering questions. There are 36 different topics/weeks in the course but we will not have time to go through them all. I will pick which topics I feel are the most beneficial to her learning in 3rd grade. We started reading the first week's article on "Getting Information". This week is about how computers and the Internet can be used as primary or secondary sources for finding information.
Arianna will need a notebook (any kind) for this class to take notes and complete assignments.

Arianna was moving about her room a lot. Is it ok for me to ask her to sit at her desk and she can take breaks if needed? At one point she was laying on the floor holding the laptop in the air. It was very hard to focus on her. She was very distracted by her dog as well who kept coming into her bedroom.
With Social Studies Weekly, we began the week 1 welcome and overview. We covered, "Centuries of Exploration of Our Amazing Earth" and "Mars, the next Frontier." We reviewed Location, Mars Curiosity Rover (MCR),Atomic Clock, Cartography, Elon Musk and Space X

What a delightful and sweet young lady! Today was the first time I met Kate for our first class. Kate shared with me that she LOVES school here! She told me, "I'm not the best at Social Studies." When I asked her why, it seems that she associates Social Studies with the stress of memorization and freezing on tests. We will dispel these negative associations this year! Kate has an enthusiasm to learn and is open and curious to the world around her.
Dylan has hung a map on his wall since our last class and it is great to see it there! Today, we completed a lesson about the Concept of Citizenship. First Dylan completed a handout that was then placed in a newly created green Social Studies folder in his storage space. We then worked on a lesson in Social Studies weekly about the American flag.

Dylan needs a mouse attachment for his laptop so he can successfully maneuver around on his own. Dylan is insecure about reading out loud, but he loves to listen to things that are read to him.
