Lesson Topic
Book 2, Lesson 1 Words with welded sounds ang, ung, ing, unk, ank
Lesson Outline
Dylan started the lesson reading from a stack of words that have b/d and also different medial closed vowels. Dylan got these right. I am working on his anchoring of the letters b/d. I encourage Dylan to trace the letter on the table before he decides what it says. This seems to help when he does it. Dylan practiced all the vowels. He practiced the letters and sounds of consonants and digraphs: f, wh, v, qu, x, z, ch, s, and d. He practiced welded sounds: ung, ing, ong, ang, ank, ink, onk, all unk, am, an. Dylan still has some trouble remembering that the welded sounds have three sounds welded together. He seems to short cut these sounds with inaccurate results in the reading of the word. Dylan practiced the words rings, malls, and hens using the magnetic letters. He identified the base word and suffix. He read sung, banks, bunks, tanks, and dunk. Dylan identified the welded sounds in these words. Dylan practiced a large stack of 2.1 words playing "ladder." Dylan then was charted using the words on p. 4. Dylan made the following errors: sack for sank, bung for dung, sing for sink, dang for bang, tack for tank, and bunk for dunk. Dylan knows that the interventions for b/d are necessary, but he still blurts out the wrong letter without turning to the interventions. We will work on isolation of words with this issue when we continue our work during the summer and next year. Dylan read sentences on p. 8. Dylan left out the "n" in most welded sounds when he was reading. He also mixed up b/d. Dylan practiced Quick Drill in Reverse. He practiced all vowels. He practiced consonants and digraphs: p. qu, v, ch, th, and ck. He practiced ong, ang, ank, ink, onk, and unk. We will finish this lesson tomorrow.
