Lesson Comments
Dylan enjoyed playing the game, Sinking the Ship. He read the -ng and -nk welded words without any help. After we played the game, I had Dylan read 15 words so I could chart his progress. He correctly read all 15 words. During the dictation section of the lesson, Dylan had difficulty writing each word. He couldn't readily retrieve the letters that made the sounds in each of the words. He would repeat the word and finger tap each word to isolate the individual sounds. If he still was not able to spell the word, he would repeat the process.

Lesson Topic
listening comprehension, cause and effect, descriptive words, research
Lesson Outline
Dylan enjoyed listening to 'Bartholomew and the Oobleck'.He did well making predictions. Focus was on sequence, cause and effect and characterization. In the story, the king demands the magicians make something new to fall from the sky. They make oobleck, a sticky substance that is a liquid until it is squeezed, and then it becomes a solid. Once it is no longer squeezed, it turns back into a liquid. Dylan had a lot of fun making oobleck and playing with it. He predicted what it would look like, and described how it looked, felt, smelled and and sounded. We discussed the science of liquid vs solid. Dylan drew a picture of oobleck as a liquid and also as a solid. We brainstormed adjectives to describe oobleck. Dylan wanted to make a map of the Loxahatchee River. He researched on line to find pictures of fish and eels that he believed to be in the river. He drew a map and then pasted pictures of fish and eels onto the map. He was very pleased with the result.

Lesson Comments
Dylan continues to have difficulties blending initial sounds with the -ng and -nk welded letters. He needs to repeat the words and also repeat the finger tap strategy to help him isolate the sounds in each word. Marking the elements in each word was an easy task for Dylan. While reading the 5 sentences, Dylan was often distracted which prevented his reading from being fluent.

Lesson Topic

Lesson Outline
Dylan continued writing his personal narrative paragraph. Focus was on letter and word spacing and spelling. He enjoyed a game involving consonant blends. Dylan was very interested in the book, 'Flat Stanley's Worldwide Adventure: The Great Egyptian Grave Robbery'. He asked many questions about the historical references. We talked about the sequencing, cause and effect and historical content.

Lesson Comments
During the Sort It activity, Dylan immediately recognized the different elements in the words. However, he could not say the word immediately. He needed to say the word and finger tap it several times before he said the word. Dylan needs more practice at oral reading so his phrasing becomes smoother.

Lesson Topic
writing, phonics, oral comprehension
Lesson Outline
We continued to work on the personal narrative paragraph we started last week. Dylan chose a topic and dictated what happened first, next and last. He also dictated an opening and closing sentence. He began to write the outline in paragraph form focusing on letter and word spacing. In phonics, we focused on the long u sound, both reading and spelling one syllable, long u words. Dylan enjoyed a game involving identifying digraphs. We completed the "Flat Stanley Story' and discussed the similarities and differences between the two "Flat Stanley' stories I read.

Substep 2.1 Provide Practice to Develop Accuracy: Words with Welded Letters
Lesson Outline
The emphasis will be on spelling words with the welded letters. Dylan will be asked to first finger tap the dictated words to isolate the individual sounds.
