We reviewed some initial work dealing with Newton's first law, defining inertia and stating Newton's law dealing with motion. A demonstration of "flicking" two varying masses, one in each of 2 cups and covered with a tissue was used to show the need for a greater force to move one than the other. The mass of the 2 objects was shown to relate to the force needed to overcome inertia, a direct relationship was shown. A spring balance was used to show the actual force needed to move the individual masses. The difference between mass, weight, and volume was stressed and the units used for each reintroduced.
