Geological Time -
GT started a geological time activity. Using adding machine tape, we measured 5-meter length and taped it to the floor. GT was instructed to measure out 0.1 mm from the start line, roughly the width of a pencil line, to mark when humans arrived. He then was given different lengths to measure and mark, with the event related to that point on the timeline, including the first Grasses, Apes, Horses during the current Cenozoic Era. He then marked the extinction of dinosaurs, the first flowering plants, earthworms, mammals, and the start of the dinosaurs of the Mesozoic era. Traveling back he marked when the first winged insects, the sharks, amphibians, ferns, land plants, and jawed fish appeared during the Paleozoic Era. He then, continuing to move back in time, added the onset of Eukaryotes, the significant increase in Oxygen to the atmosphere, and the first living being (the Prokaryotes), back to the creation of the Earth and moon designation, the start of Precambrian Time. We discussed how the different eras were determined and how they are represented in the fossil record. GT then determined what percentage of the Earth’s life included living things, how many years dinosaurs existed and other analytical questions about our timeline. GT then watched the first half of the movie “The History of Earth’. We will complete the film next time.
