Lesson Topic
liquid pressure
Lesson Outline
Review that pressure is force per unit area, and that weight is a force. The pressure exerted by a block of wood on a table is determined by the weight of the block (mass x gravity) divided by the area in contact with the table. A container of liquid exerts a liquid pressure determined by the weight of the liquid and the area of the bottom of the container. Mass depends on the amount of matter and the volume, which is also the density. The pressure exerted by a liquid on a container is dependent upon gravity, the density, and the depth of the liquid. The greater the density, the greater the pressure exerted by equal volumes of liquid, in a direct proportion. Since the density is constant for a given liquid, and the volume can be kept constant, the depth of the liquid in a container will determine the pressure. The greater the depth, the greater the pressure.
