Lesson Topic
connecting ideas/equations/Sun is a star
Lesson Outline
We spent the first hour becoming familiar with the program, environs, and the students. Jonathan was receptive when being introduced to the other students and teachers at Batt and was respectful and well-mannered answering questions and interacting. We then worked on subject matter in English, Science, and Math, using materials that were sent by his teacher, who I subsequently contacted and who welcomed further contacts and inquiries. Jonathan read fluently and was an active and enthusiastic learnier. He demonstrated higher-level thinking in his responses and very good comprehension of textual material. In Science, Jonathan demonstrated good understanding of the sun as a star and answered all questions correctly. He was amused at our collaborative efforts to create a rhyme for the last question. In Math, Jonathan demonstrated good understanding of equations and easily figured out the answers to several questions which required him to determine the unknown variable in equations. He was a bit challenged with two of the questions, but quickly understood the rationale once the two sides were isolated and he could determine whether they were equal and the validity of the equation. Jonathan showed a propensity to understand the work shown to him and did not hesitate to work on assignments. He is a talented artist and demonstrated his skills on the whiteboard several times throughout our session. In his last hour, he worked with another student with whom he got along famously; the two even made tentative plans to get together outside of school, pending parental approval. It appears that Jonathan has made a terrific adjustment to the Batt School on Day 1 and is projected to remain a welcome addition, moving forward!

Lesson Comments
I had Jonathan and Christopher together the last hour of the day, from 1:30 - 2:30 PM. They got along famously! I contacted Jonathan's teacher later that day, mainly to introduce myself to her and ask one or two questions pertaining to the work. Mom said he does not have SS at school and his teacher verified that, saying they mainly just acknowledge holidays and such as a nod to SS. I plan to focus on science and math, per mom's acknowledgment; I mentioned this to Nicole. Jonathan seems like a well-mannered, bright and insightful student. I think he will be a good match to others in our program. He did come to me when he had a moment at lunchtime saying he missed mom; however, he rallied immediately when I offered to sit with him a bit and he subsequently enjoyed imaginative play with Christopher when I had the two of them together the final hour. Mom witnessed the two boys interacting and Jonathan actually told her to come back in two hours. Christopher invited Jonathan to his house - and when Jonathan asked if he meant tomorrow, Christopher responded, "Well, I don't know you that well yet - how 'bout Friday?" It was very cute! Mom laughed when I informed her. When discussing tomorrow's schedule, however, Jonathan asked to leave at 2 after his mom was informed by Elise his day was to end 2:30. She seemed to have some questions about his daily schedule and I referred her to you/Nicole for confirmation after she questioned me and Elise.
