After our daily language review, we jumped into writing. Today, Jonathan wrote his last paragraph and drew his final illustration in his rough draft of his snowy day piece. We worked to find the appropriate transition word to start the paragraph and worked to stretch out his ideas and make them more exciting. We also worked together to write a conclusion to his story. For grammar today, we worked on subjects and predicates. We pulled phrases including the subject and phrases using just the predicate out of a bag. Jonathan then sorted them by subject and predicate on a sorting mat. He enjoyed creative liberty of making fun sentences with the phrase pieces. One sentence he generated about large brown kangaroos sleeping under the bed got him giggling so hard! It was delightful to see him so engaged and enjoying the activity! He then marked the subject noun and verb in each sentence. We enjoyed two more chapters of our novel, The Knight at Dawn. We are working on oral fluency and making predictions. Jonathan used the text some to assist him with his reader response questions. On Reading Eggspress, Jonathan read a short story. He was then presented with short text examples and passages in which he had to answer multiple choice questions focused on the following skills: main idea, root word, interpreting character’s feelings and actions, drawing conclusions, and identifying the author’s purpose and mood. Some of these were challenging for Jonathan. We will revisit this activity in a future session. Religion: Today in lesson 22, we read about how we join with our parish for the celebration of Mass. At Mass we celebrate the Eucharist. Jonathan found three things he can do to take part in Mass in his word search, used the words Mass and Eucharist in one sentence, and judged statements about Jesus and the Last Supper with the appropriate smile or frown face. He scored a 5/5 on his follow up quiz for this unit.
