Lesson Outline
Language Arts: Jonathan shared part of his session with a fellow student for social interaction and team building. First, the students examined the suffixes -er (person who) and -ful (full of). Jonathan was not familiar with the term suffix, so this activity served as a great introduction for him. They created a craft of placing the suffix on a cloud, the definition on a lightning bolt, and root words for each suffix on raindrops onto a large poster paper. They set up their craft and pulled the root words from a baggie and sorted as appropriate. Together they shared the words they created and wrote them to practice the spelling for each. These included words such as thankful, joyful, cheerful, teacher, announcer, and biker. Jonathan added gamer to his! Next, we continued working together with a fun educational board game about context clues. The students took turns traveling along the board and reading questions which required them to practice using context clues to determine the meaning of a target word. This included words such as merchant and stalled. Each student took turns reading the answer key for the other. As we have been working on adverbs, we played another quick game to determine if the board space listed an adverb or a verb. The students shared various sentences using the words as well as their tricks for remembering each. To wrap up our joint session, we had fun with a plural noun word search. The words in the bank were written in singular form, but he had to find the plural version in the word search. All of the words ended in f or fe, requiring him to change the spelling to the -ves ending. After lunch, Jonathan worked on writing. We worked on the revisions and edits of Jonathan’s piece about a snowy day. We looked at punctuation, capitalization, verb tense and sentence structure. We worked to stretch some of his sentences to add more detail. I modeled how to write an introduction paragraph and we worked on completing that together. We enjoyed two chapters of our book, The Knight at Dawn. Jonathan responded to follow-up questions orally and also practiced his novel based spelling words for the week. Religion: Today we began lesson 23 which focuses on “We Celebrate the Mass”. We read about the importance of Sunday Mass, which is the Church’s greatest celebration. We read about how the Mass starts and how our prayer begins “Glory to God...”. We discussed ways to make people feel welcome and how we welcome people into Mass. Jonathan said his Our Father prayer as well.
