For my first meeting with Sophia, we discussed her greatest obstacles and/or weaknesses in her reading and writing skills. She feels confident as a reader and will devour a novel that has a theme of romance and travel adventure; however, she does not feel enthusiastic about reading non-fiction. She feels less enthusiastic about writing academic essays. She gave me a sample of her writing, an essay on Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist, which she believes illustrates her weakness in structure and organization.

Sophia is mature enough to understand her responsibility in completing her studies, but finds herself bored by the content, the method, or both. She is very perceptive and thus appreciated my attempt to engage her interests yet still focus on academic skills. Also, I sense that she is a kinesthetic learner.
