Lesson Outline
Language Arts: Today we began with our daily language review to examine capitalization and punctuation, synonyms, sounds in words, and ABC order. Next, we worked in his iReady textbook. Using the source book, Mice and Beans, Jonathan interpreted the feelings of a character, determined which sense the target word described, and identified the narrator. He also wrote two sentences to tell how he knows this is a made- up story. We then finished the revisions and edits in Jonathan’s writing piece in progress. We first try to see if Jonathan can find any errors to help with the self-revision process. He began to write his final draft by writing his introduction page and started the illustration. We enjoyed chapter 7 in our novel, The Knight at Dawn. Jack fell out of the castle and into the water! We discussed the meaning of the word “precipice” as used in the text. After lunch, a fellow student joined us for Word Work Wednesday! We used the word “tepid” to focus on today by finding the definition and part of speech in the dictionary. We also found the guide words on the top of the dictionary page, identified a synonym and antonym, and used the word in a sentence. Next, the two students put their grammar skills to the test with a game of Jeopardy! They took turns choosing categories and point values in the areas of adverbs, adjectives, articles, and the homophones to, too, and two. They did a great job and enjoyed this challenging game, asking to play again! We reinforced sportsmanship and ways to support fellow classmates in a game situation. To wrap up our joint session, we completed an activity focused on the main characters of our current novel study. The students looked through various descriptions and collaborated to decide if the adjective best described Jack or Annie. They then applied each trait to the appropriate character page. They also wrote about what the character looks like and something the character regularly does. Jonathan completed the task focused on Jack. Religion: We continued on in Jonathan’s textbook with lesson 23. Today we read about how we listen to God’s word and how the gifts of bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. We focused on the key words Gospel (the Good News about Jesus Christ and his teachings) and altar (the table of the Lord).
