Lesson Outline
As Matthew encountered some difficulty in his last vocabulary test, today we first prepared for Friday's vocabulary test by discussing and reviewing the denotation and connotation of the vocabulary words. Then, Matthew placed each word in a sentence just as he will have to for the upcoming test. I made suggestions where the vocabulary word was misused . I then provided instruction on literary point of view so that Matthew could complete his slide show presentation for English class which requires him to identify the point of view in the story "The Worn Path" and to discuss the reliability of the narrator. I pointed out that as the main character believes she sees ghosts as well as boys offering to serve her cake in the middle of a swamp, her reliability remains questionable. We finished the slide show presentation by discussing the main characters in the story and by selecting an appropriate literary symbol for each character. Next, in preparation for the History assignment on Buddhism , we briefly looked at the glossary section of Karen Armstong's book to familiarize Matthew with the basic concepts of the philosophy . I provided a brief explanation of the Buddhist concept of human suffering and craving, and the Buddhist belief that suffering can only be eliminated by the erasing of one's ego. I suggested some reading in the Armstrong book which we will outline next time. Last, I helped Matthew complete his Spanish homework.
