Biology:
DNA: Transcription and translation -
For the first half of this class we reviewed the function of the ribosome, and the structure of the double helix known as DNA. I gave a short description on how Watson and Crick discovered the double helix, using the crystallography work of Rosalind Franklin. We examined the structure of DNA: the bases, purine and pyrimidine, the phosphate and sugar that connects them together. We then examined how the bases attract to each other (Thymine and adenine, cytosine and guanine) to form nucleotides and codons. The second half of the class we discussed how protein synthesis occurs. DNA is copied by mRNA in the ribosomes, then recopied by tRNA to make amino acids. Finally GT worked on an activity showing how codons are used to express traits, and how this information is transmitted to the cells. Homework: decode a list of codon sentences.
