Lesson Outline
Religion: Today Jonathan began by recalling our discussion about Mary from yesterday. He read the Hail Mary prayer and drew a picture of her. We then read in his textbook about how the saints are close to God. We learned that saints are followers of Jesus who have died and now live forever with God. We read about six different saints. Language Arts: In Jonathan’s iReady textbook, we used the source book, Mice and Beans to examine what words tell us about key details and then what the pictures also tell us about key details in the story. These details help us understand more about the characters, setting, and events in the story. For our All About Me nonfiction text features project, we began with a book explaining pie charts. We examined pie charts and then made a sample chart using data from an adverb paper we completed last week. Jonathan then made a pie chart with labels using his five character traits from his glossary. He also wrote a title for his project, “Jazzy Jonathan”. He then wrote a caption for his photograph and he used markers to provide a decorative accent on all of these pieces. For literature today, we read chapter 6 of Pirates Past Noon. Jonathan then sequenced the beginning, middle, and end of the chapter. For a fun activity for a recap of chapters 5 and 6, he drew his own treasure map to capture the setting of the story. His map reflected the requirements: a pirate ship, an island shaped like a whale, the location of the treasure, and the location of the tree house in a palm tree. We then read chapter 7. For our follow up work, we examined the words lubbers and gale by telling what’s happening when used in the story, what he thought the words meant, and we used the dictionary to find the actual meaning. For grammar, we read the book, Under, Over, By the Clover: What is a Preposition? This fun rhyming book reviewed prepositions and we found ways to describe the funny characters in the picture at the end using prepositions. He then practiced using prepositions to complete simple sentences in IXL. Finally, we practiced spelling on Reading Eggspress focusing on the ee sound made by ea and ee. Jonathan worked through various games to practice proper spelling of words with these sounds like bleed, cream, green, and cheek. He scored 10/10 on the follow up test.
