Comparison and Contrast Paper
Lesson Outline
Gave Vlad my handout on two strategies for comparing and contrasting. We spent a hour analyzing Rembrandt's painting The Anatomy Lesson, looking at the faces in the painting, the amount of attention each student is giving to the anatomy lesson, the figure of the corpse, the professor's appearance, and the over-all tone of the painting, looking at the symbolism of darkness (ignorance) versus the symbolism of light in the painting (observation, learning, and knowledge). We discussed block quoting and how to introduce each block quote using the phrase "According to...."
Assignment
Vlad to research what art critics have said about each of the two paintings. Vlad needs two block quotes per painting, with the two block quotes to be placed after his three paragraphs of what Vlad himself discovered in each painting. Vlad encouraged by me to choose where in his final paper he wants to incorporate pictures of the two paintings. First draft due on Monday.

Lesson Comments
At first very reluctant to write about paintings. Vlad told me his mother dragged him to too many art museums when he was younger, but with the "discovery" of interesting details in the paintings, Vlad warmed up to the assignment. Vlad still to earner to get a tough assignment over and done with as soon as possible. I sense a certain amount of impatience -- possibly due to he is being shown writing strategies he should already be very familiar with.
