Lesson Outline
Religion: Today we began chapter 26 in Jonathan’s We Believe textbook. This lesson is entitled, We Care for the Gifts of God’s Creation. Jonathan read the lyrics to the first part of the song, Shout from the Mountain. We read about how God has given us all of creation to use and enjoy. We read about taking care of our creation with examples including cleaning up litter, watering plants, and Jonathan drew about building homes for those in need. We also read about how animals are part of God’s creation as well and how we care for them. Language Arts: We began with our daily language review routine. Jonathan completed the Monday and Tuesday tasks today which focused on capitalization, punctuation, adjectives, alphabetical order, vocabulary, writing a question, and rhyming. Next, we reviewed possessive nouns with a Brain Pop Jr. learning video. Jonathan and I worked through the easy quiz together. We completed an activity related to our novel, Pirates Past Dawn, in which we used items and people from the book and made them possessive (i.e. Annie’s boots and Jack’s pencil) to practice this skill. Additionally, we completed a sense activity from the book in which we discussed which of the five senses the items in the word bank fell under. Jonathan took his final assessment for our literature study by completing a 15-question whole book test. He scored 14/15 on his follow up exam. We then began our next novel, Magic Tree House #5, Night of the Ninjas. Jonathan took his spelling pre-test for words based on the novel. This includes words like warrior, shadows, enemies, and squeak. Using an online source, we read the first two chapters of the book. We examined the cover of the book and made predictions as to what we thought might be happening. We found the title and the author’s name. To continue our study of nonfiction text features, Jonathan practiced using a table of contents. We also read four interesting short passages about bees. For each passage, Jonathan then made an appropriate heading (nonfiction text feature) to briefly describe the passage.
