TEAMS: Taxonomy / Protists
After discussing the current viral pandemic and the biology of a virus, GT and I reviewed the structure of he taxonomic system, including the meme to remember the different taxa, and the criteria for each. GT was challenged with listing the different kingdoms and the qualifications of membership of each. We then examined the Kingdom: Protista and the related phyla. These taxa is the junk drawer of taxonomy that nearly all single cell eukaryotes (paramecium, euglena, amoeba, etc.) and some multi-cellular eukaryotes (algae, kelp)belongs to. This begs the question on what is a protista, so we spent this class examining several members of the kingdom, and determined that each phylum had qualities of other kingdoms, but none had all the qualities of a single kingdom. We watched a current video showing some of the old favorites, and some newly discovered, members of the kingdom: Protista.
