TEAMS / SKYPE: Taxonomy / Plants
GT was quizzed on the seven taxa, and criteria of membership of each. We then examined the kingdom Plantae. I showed how this kingdom is further classified into two phyla (vascular and non-vascular), and into classes of vascular plants (sporophytes, gymnosperm, and angiosperm). I provided examples for each, and illustrated how the use of Latin helps determine the characteristics of each taxon. We continued with the basic anatomy of a plant, including organs and tissues. We reviewed the needs of plants to perform photosynthesis and discussed the manner by which water and CO2 is transported. Finally we examined the reproductive organs of the conifers and flowering plants.
