Session Date
Lesson Topic
Federalism and the Division of Powers Between the President and Governors
Lesson Outline
It was absolutely fantastic to see Katya today for the first time since March 15! Today we began to examine how federalism impacts federal/national law vs. state laws. No where are we seeing this more clearly than in our current crisis regarding the coronavirus. We continue to observe that U.S. governors are passing a multitude of laws regarding their state's response to this crisis. The president also passes laws that impact all 50 states. We have learned that some states have outstanding, "rock star" governors and we will further examine this issue in future classes. In anticipation of today's class, Katya read chapter 9 on Congress in her text and she took notes. Well done, Katya! Katya was working on an English assignment about the USNS Comfort in NYC, so I shared some of my knowledge about the ship with her and the good news - that the ship will now be admitting coronavirus patients.

Lesson Comments
Katya and her family have been through a terrible time since I last saw her on March 15. In addition to this pandemic and quarantine nightmare, Katya has endured other terrible stresses. Due to his debilitating condition, her Dad suffered seizures last week and last night prompting visits to Jupiter Medical Center. Because of the virus, Mr. D. has been sent home for now under the care of a private nurse. It has been deemed too dangerous for Mr. D. to be hospitalized at this point in time. My heart breaks for the entire family! While we were in class today, Katya's dad called out and made loud noises at certain intervals. Fortunately, this is apparently not because of pain, but due to the degenerative nature of the disease. Katya explained that it has been difficult for her to engage in classes from home as she is uncomfortable with teachers hearing the noises emitted from her dad. Fortunately, Katya knows that I don't "scare easily" and that I can handle this situation on my end. Another stressful issue for Katya is that her World History teacher claims that Katya plagiarized an assignment and the situation is being investigated and not yet resolved. My heart hurts for this special young lady.
