TEAMS: Taxonomy / Plants -
We reviewed the vascular and non vascular plants, the types of mosses and worts, the seedless vascular plants, the gymnosperms and the angiosperms. We examined an image showing the structure of the leaf and discussed the different venation patterns, which suggest whether or not a plant is a monocot or dicot. We also talked about the process of a plant providing for its offspring in the form of the seed, and how all structures inform the process of photosynthesis. We also discussed the anatomy of the flower, and included the vocabulary associated with the structures. We examined a diagram of a flower and labeled the female organs (the pistil) and the male organs (the stamen). We discussed how pollination occurs and the importance of genetic diversity in some plants and the potential for self cross-pollination in some plants. We also had an extensive discussion on the importance of bees and the crisis humanity is facing by the recent drastic decline in the number of beehives worldwide.
