Lesson Outline
Abby plays the audio, we then discuss the salient points, she then takes the test.
Chapter 13: Phrenology, first established by Franz Gall in 1810, was a precursor to neurology. This was the practice of measuring the skull to determine the shape and size of regions of the brain. His theory was that human personality and behavior was based on the shape and size of regions of the brain. This was the groundwork for neurology.
Chapter 14: Gustav Fechner - founder of experimental psychology which applies scientific method to research of behavior and the mind. He believed that the mind could be measured and established psychophysics.
Chapter 15 - Explanation of psychodynamic psychology developed by Sigmund Freud. He teaches that unconscious psychological forces impact human development. People establish defense mechanism and then through methods like free association, the unconscious conflicts are brought to consciousness. This chapter also has a discussion of the Oedipus complex, the id, ego and superego. There is also mention of other famous theorists explaining their own versions of psychodynamic psychology.
