Lesson Outline
We kicked off Fantastic Friday with our daily language review. This exercise tasked us with making corrections for capitalization and punctuation needed for names and dates in a fictional birthday list. Jonathan did a great job, however needed assistance with capitalization needs for titles such as Dr. and Mrs. when followed by a name. To follow up our grammar activity from yesterday, we watched a Brain Pop Jr. educational video about prefixes. Jonathan did a great job working through the easy and hard quizzes, scoring a 3/5 and 5/5, respectively. We finished reading our novel, Midnight on the Moon. In our shared read-aloud, we worked on reading fluency. Our focus in oral reading is pausing with commas and at the end of the sentence. We are also working on reading the proper pronouns. For example, “she” and “he” are often misread as the opposite. We worked through the follow-up comprehension questions after each chapter (9 & 10) together as Jonathan needed a little help with some of the details. We discussed the vocabulary terms “rustled” and “wise”. Jonathan then used the words in context by telling of a time he made a wise choice. He needed prompting and some discussion to think of some wise choices he’s made. We discussed some events that had occurred back at school. Next, he took his spelling test for words related to the novel. He greatly improved this week as he scored a 5/12 on the pre-test and scored 10/12 today missing: equipment, astronauts, and absolutely (the bonus word). Finally, we entered the final stages of our huge writing project! Jonathan titled his book: The Amazing Amazon. He first wrote a title on his glossary page. Next, we worked to get his pages numbered properly. He then placed all of his pages in the correct order and he followed a model to complete his table of contents. We worked together on proper capitalization. Finally, he began working on the cover sheet by writing the title in block letters and filling them in with colored pencils.
