Lesson Topic
Biomes of the World
Lesson Outline
Jonathan worked on the tiaga forest biome. He learned where this biome is located. Jonathan looked at world maps and learned that the taiga forest takes up more land than any other biome on Earth. He also learned that this biome is in Russia in the area known as Siberia. It is also in the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Greenland, Canada, and Alaska. Jonathan drew the biome for his practice of the important concepts. He made the types of trees found in the taiga which include many conifers. Jonathan learned the vocabulary word coniferous. He studied the needle formation and cone types as well as tree shapes of the spruce, pine, cedar, and fir. Jonathan learned that the caribou travels south to get out of the long winter. He also had a demonstration of the concept of long winter when we did the Summer and Winter Solstice diagrams yesterday. Jonathan learned that the taiga has wolverines, the Cooper's hawk, wolves, moose, the showshoe hare, deer, lynx, and chipmunks. Jonathan learned that many of the animals have broad feet so that they can walk on top of the snow. He learned that the winters are very long and very dark, and that the summers are very short with light almost 24 hours per day. He learned he meaning of the "Land of the Midnight Sun."
