Biomes of the World
Lesson Outline
Jonathan started his lesson by preparing his drawing page to include a marine biome. Jonathan drew a hammerhead shark and a squid. On the back of his page, Jonathan wrote about the three levels of the ocean: the sunlit, the twilight, and the midnight zone. He wrote the dimensions of these zones and what types of sealife grows in each. Jonathan learned that 90% of the Earth's oceans are described as the Midnight Zone. Jonathan wrote vocabulary words on his flashcards for : plankton, kelp, and phytoplankton. Each of these types of algae in the ocean were reviewed by a website or discussed with detail. Jonathan started work on a fresh water biome as well. He learned the vocabulary word: estuaries. Jonathan reviewed the term: photosynthesis as the process that plants do to make their own food using sunlight. Jonathan made a flashcard for this word also. Jonathan added to his knowledge of the marine life and ocean floor topography. We discussed the depth of the Mariana Trench as being 36,000 feet. Jonathan then looked at the website for the height of Mt. Everest which is 29,029 feet. This gave a good example of the depth of the Mariana Trench if it were turned right side up. Jonathan made a flashcard for bioluminescence. We discussed how this is a chemically produced method that fish in the Twilight Zone can use to make light. Jonathan took vey good notes.
