Lesson Outline
Religion: This morning Jonathan read Evening Prayer from the prayer booklet in his textbook. We then reviewed the vocabulary for Unit 3 with a fun word scramble activity. Language Arts: This morning our daily language review focused on proper nouns, possessives, and commas in a list. We then jumped right into literature and finished reading the last three chapters of our novel, Dolphins at Daybreak. After reading each chapter, we worked through comprehension and critical thinking questions. Our vocabulary today focused on the words: clinging, chattered (talked), and dawn, which we first discussed using context clues and then clarified the definitions as needed. We worked on identifying key details in the text. In our shared reading, we worked on reading fluency, with particular focus on stopping at periods as well as reading the correct pronoun as he tends to mix these in oral reading. Jonathan also took his spelling test for his novel-based spelling words. He scored 5/12 on the pretest and showed great improvement by scoring 11/12 today after several days of using the words! He also got the bonus words (oceanographer and mysteries) correct. To enrich our literature topic, we read an article entitled, Dolphins on Duty. We read how the U.S. Navy has used animals to serve as spies. They are currently training dolphins to find underwater mines using their skills of echolocation and deep diving capabilities. We watched a short informational video about bottlenose dolphins that accompanied the article. (This activity was provided through Scholastic Learn at Home, grades 3 – 5). Additionally, we enjoyed watching some live webcams of various marine life as provided by The Georgia Aquarium. We saw live beluga whales, gators, California sea lions, puffins, penguins, and the large fish tanks. Finally, Jonathan continued writing his story about a boy whose pet can talk. He finished the story right as our session ended. We will review and go over his writing in our next session.
