Lesson Topic
Their Eyes Were Watching God/Hurston
Lesson Outline
As the novel strikes a secular tone, we examined why the author might have titled the book"Their Eyes Were Watching God" .The title is a quote from the chapter we studied today that famously takes place in The Glades during the 1928 hurricane. We discussed other references to God in the book and delved into the characters' fear of death during the hurricane . As death looms, the character's eyes watch for God. We thought about what people might look for at such a time and how life's fragility gives meaning to Janie's grabbing all of life's experiences before they elude her. Olivia also examined various symbols and figurative language and practiced identifying the various forms of figurative language in these dramatic pages. For homework ,I assigned finishing the novel.
