Lesson Topic
Coral Reef biomes and Pond ecosystem
Lesson Outline
Jonathan began his lesson by studying the three types of coral reefs: the fringe reef, the barrier reef, and the atoll. Jonathan drew a very complete coral reef. He put in the animals that were in the discussion development. Jonathan reviewed the definition of photosynthesis. This was part of a previous lesson, but needed review. Jonathan learned the meaning of Atoll. The atolls of the Moldives off of India were studied to see how they look and how they are formed. Jonathan learned the meaning of parasite, commensilism, and mutualism. He studied the relationship of the clownfish and the sea anemone in the coral reef. Jonathan watched a video which explained that the clownfish allows himself to be gently stung by the anemone. After a short while, the clownfish grows a protective coating over its scales. This enables the clownfish to enter into the anemone where it picks up bits of algae and food from the sea anemone. The sea anemone also benefits because the clownfish cleans up its waving projections so that they can filter more water for food. Jonathan made a scene using a pond scene and black line animals that were cut out. He placed the animals on the pond scene. The discussion was around the subject of producers and consumers. Jonthan learned that the process of photsynthesis and the sun's energy sustains all life. He learned that the producers use sunlight to make their own food. They are the food source for the consumers. Jonathan worked at producing the food chain within the pond habitat. He showed that the bear would eat a duck or a fish. The fish might eat the algae at the edge of the pond. Jonathan could see that the hawk would eat a fish which is sustained by algae. The understanding was that all life depends on the plant's ability to do the process of photosynthesis in order to sustain all life.
