TEAMS: Taxonomy / Animals - Arthropods
We examined the phyla: Arthropoda, which consists of four classes: Crustacean, Chelicerata, Insects, and Myriapoda. We then watched a ‘Shape of Life’ video illustrating the evolutionary changes and advantages of the arthropods. We discussed the physical features related to this group. All arthropods have three body sections: head, thorax and abdomen, and segmented appendages. They all molt out of their exoskeleton, as they grow. This phylum represents the first animals to leave the sea and populate the terrestrial landscape. The segmented legs allowed for movement over all terrains and minor evolutionary jumps allowed them to also learn to fly. There are more arthropods than any other animal phyla, in fact they represent 80% of all animals on Earth today. Homework: study notes on Invertebrates
